About

About the process

The beautiful sustainable timbers used in my jewellery are all sourced from local merchants. I saw and sand them by hand after which they are finished with a natural wood oil. These wooden components are complemented well by the sterling silver studs they are hung from, which are all crafted by hand and given various finishes using traditional techniques.

Inspiration
My inspiration comes from those calm moments in the wild places when it feels like time slows down and in turn forces our minds to slow down too. If we allow this, a new world begins to emerge around us. One filled with intricate detail right down to even in the smallest parts. I'm especially drawn to textures on bark, rocks and seedpods and in awe of the complexity of the structures of flowers and leaves.
About the maker
I'm Karen Visagie (née Hulley) of Hulley Jewellery. The aim of my brand is to create beautiful pieces that are unique and handmade and reflect the beauty in the details of the natural world. I love to experiment with different textures and finishes on the metals I use and have always admired the richness and warmth of timber, so combining them just feels right. One of my favourite things to do is bushwalking and spending time in nature. As I definitely don't get to do this nearly enough, I like the idea of keeping those wild places close in the wearable form of jewellery.
